Stepped Horns

These are some loudspeakers designed by Walt at Speakerstore.nl. They are basically a tapped horn I think. The plans can be found here.

A friend needed a subwoofer and I suggested this, due to its small footprint. It is a bit of a 'nutter's' speaker, with an 1000w driver (the Ciare 12SW), and he's built 2 of them! (one for another friend). They sound good, and go low. They're pretty sensitive (so much so that it's almost impossible not to overpower his small bookshelf speakers when one of these is switched on).

One driven with less than 700w is very powerful, shaking trouser legs and causing the whole house to resonate. I'd love to hear 2 driven with 1500w each!

Listening to a sine sweep through one, they do have output at 30Hz, but there seems to be a peak at about 50Hz. It's possible this is caused by a room mode, or similar though.

They're a very easy build, and recommended for anyone's first forrays into bass mentalism.
